Alan Parker is Chairman of Brunswick Group LLP, the leading international financial and corporate communications firm which he founded in 1987. Since then, Brunswick has grown organically into an international firm of more than 80 Partners with offices in London, New York, Paris, Frankfurt, Milan, Stockholm, Dubai, Hong Kong, Beijing, Johannesburg, Brussels, Berlin, Vienna and Washington DC.

Brunswick is ranked in first place for M&A communications advisers in the in the UK, EU, US and Asia. Alan has worked on a wide range of assignments, acts as senior consultant on many of the firm’s retained accounts and takes an active role in special project work.

Alan has established a number of sister companies to Brunswick, including: Merchant, a design agency; Trinity, which coaches executives on presentation skills; Brunswick Arts, the leading public relations agency for arts and cultural institutions; and Cantos, the online provider of corporate and financial video communications.

Alan is Chairman of Save the Children UK, the international charity, and was the founder and Vice-Chairman of China Now, a nationwide festival in the UK in 2008 celebrating Chinese arts and culture designed to strengthen understanding and relationships between the UK and China. Brunswick also hosts a number of charities in its offices. Currently these are PilotLight, Jo's Trust, Funding Network, House of Illustration and We Are What We Do.

Andy Bond, chairman, Asda

Andy Bond was named chairman of the Asda executive committee in April 2010.

Andy Bond was appointed President & CEO of Asda in March 2005. He started his Asda career as a marketing manager in 1994, but during his 13 years at the company he has held various positions, including: COO where he was responsible for Retail Operations and Logistics, Managing Director for George, taking over when George Davis left the company, and Marketing Director - a position he progressed to within three years of joining Asda.

Since taking on the role as CEO, Andy has sharpened Asda's strategic and operational focus, re-invigorated the top team and ensured a renewed focus on a common sense approach to retail.

Andy was educated at Kings Grammar School Grantham, before studying Engineering at Salford University. He started his career as a graduate trainee at British Gas, before attending Cranfield School of Management where he studied for an MBA. He was awarded Cranfield's Top Student Award that year.

He is married with two young children.

Clare Chapman, director general of workforce, NHS and Social Care, Department of Health

Clare is responsible for system leadership on people matters so NHS and social care staff can serve the health needs of their communities. She took up the post in January 2007.

Clare has more than 20 years of personnel experience in the UK, USA and Europe. Prior to joining the Department of Health, she was Group Personnel Director at Tesco.

Her previous roles include Vice President of Human Resources for Pepsi Cola International’s Central Europe Operations and Dean of Quaker University, Quaker Oats Inc. Chicago, where she established the company’s learning institute.

Clare is a Non Executive Director of TUI Travel PLC and Chairman of the Remuneration Committee; on the Audit Committee of Jobcentre Plus; an advisory Board Member for the Judge Institute, Business School for the University of Cambridge; and a Fellow of the Institute of Personnel.

Rt Revd & Rt Hon. Richard Chartres, The Bishop of London

The Rt Revd & Rt Hon. Richard Chartres is the 132nd Bishop of London.

He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge and after ordination in 1973 served his curacy in Bedford. In 1975 he was appointed Chaplain to Bishop Robert Runcie, first at St Albans and then at Lambeth when Bishop Runcie was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury in 1980. He subsequently served as Vicar of St Stephen’s Rochester Row from 1984 until 1992 he was consecrated Bishop of Stepney. He was appointed Bishop of London in 1995.

The Bishop of London is also Dean of HM Chapels Royal and a member of the Privy Council and an ex-officio member of the House of Lords. In addition to normal diocesan work the Bishop serves as Chairman of the Church Commissioner and he is also Chairman of the Church Buildings Division of the Church of England.

He has published in the field of Religion, Science and the Environment and, with Cardinal Hume, founded the St Ethelburga Centre for Preventing and Transforming Conflict. His first academic love was Tudor history and the publication of his History of Gresham College earned him a fellowship of the Society of Antiquaries.

Adam Crozier, chief executive, ITV

Adam Crozier joined ITV Plc as Chief Executive in April 2010. He is currently leading a company-wide review and developing the strategy that will transform the business in the next 3-5 years.

Prior to joining ITV Adam Crozier was Chief Executive of Royal Mail Group (2003 – 2010) where he led Royal Mail's transformation from an organisation failing customer service targets and losing more than £1m every working day to a company making £1m every working day and delivering on its Quality of Service targets.

He was also responsible for driving forward Royal Mail’s plan to invest around £2bn in modernising and automating the business to enable it to compete and lead both in the UK and in the international marketplace.

Before joining Royal Mail, he was Chief Executive of the Football Association while between 1988 and 1999 he held a number of senior roles at Saatchi and Saatchi, including Joint Chief Executive from 1995.

Adam sits on the board of Debenhams.

Adam was born on the Isle of Bute in 1964.

Carolyn Gray, group HR and pensions director, Guardian Media Group

Joined GMG in January 2006. Carolyn previously worked in HR with Sainsbury’s, Focus Wickes and Smiths Group plc where she was director of reward & policy. She is a member of the Council of the Institute of Employment Studies, and sits on the Executive of the Involvement and Participation Association, and is a Trustee of Christian Aid.

John Hannett, general secretary, USDAW

John Hannett is the General Secretary of the UK's fourth largest union, Usdaw. He was first elected General Secretary of the 385,000 strong union in May 2004 and was re-elected in September 2008.

John sits on both the Executive Committee and the General Council of the TUC and represents the interests of Usdaw members on a number of Government Commissions, including the Low Pay Commission. He is also an ACAS Council Member.

John has a wide range of experience working with senior Government Ministers, Chief Executives and Company Directors to advance the working lives of Usdaw members and promotes the value of trade union membership at all levels.

Sir Peter Housden, permanent secretary, Scottish Government

Peter Housden took up post as Permanent Secretary to the Scottish Government in June 2010. Prior to this appointment, Peter was Permanent Secretary at the Department for Communities and Local Government (then the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister) from October 2005.

Peter was previously with Department for Education and Skills (DfES) where he was Director General for Schools, responsible for primary and secondary education in England's 27,000 schools from 2001 to 2005. Peter led the major reform programmes on educational standards and workforce reform, and the drive toward a more intelligent accountability framework for schools and local authorities.

Prior to joining DfES, Peter served from 1994 as Chief Executive of Nottinghamshire County Council, leading the organisation through local government review and a wide-ranging programme of modernisation. In September 2000, he was seconded to the Audit Commission for six months to lead its work on the NHS national plan.

Peter began his career as a comprehensive school teacher in Shropshire and worked as an education officer in three county authorities before being appointed Director of Education in Nottinghamshire in 1991.

Peter is a trustee of the Work Foundation and an Associate Fellow of Warwick University Business School.

Will Hutton, executive vice chair, The Work Foundation

Will Hutton is executive vice chair of The Work Foundation, a leading voice on work, employment and organisation issues in the UK. Called on to advise senior political and business figures and comment in the national and international media, Will is today one of the pre-eminent economics commentators.

He was a stockbroker and investment analyst and then moved to the BBC, where he worked both on radio, as a producer and reporter, and on TV as economics correspondent for Newsnight. Prior to joining The Work Foundation, Will spent four years as editor-in-chief of The Observer, for which he continues to write a weekly column.

Will’s best-known book is probably The State We’re In, which was seen at the time as setting the scene for the Blair revolution. Since then he has published The State to Come, The Stakeholding Society, The Writing on the Wall: China and the West in the 21st Century. Will is currently working on his next book – a timely examination of fairness and due desert – Them and Us.

Will is a governor of the London School of Economics, where he is also a visiting professorial fellow at the Centre for Global Governance. He is a member of the Scott Trust, and a fellow of the Sunningdale Institute.

He is chair of the new Commission on Ownership, which will examine to what extent and how ownership matters, ranging from the UK’s market in corporate ownership to the promotion of mutuality in the private and public sector, aiming to deliver their findings in a report to be published in Autumn 2011.

Jim McAuslan, general secretary, BALPA

Jim McAuslan became the British Airline Pilots’ Association General Secretary in 2003 and has since grown the organisation to represent 80% of the UK’s commercial pilots. He has led a major European rethink on how pilots can organise to meet the challenges posed by trans-national companies.

 

He joined the Inland Revenue in 1972 serving in local offices prior to being drafted to their Head Office where he became active in the Inland Revenue Staff Federation. He was appointed Deputy General Secretary in 1990 and was subsequently responsible for merger negotiations that created the 300,000 strong Public and Commercial Services union. Jim was responsible for the union’s campaign and parliamentary work and representing those civil servants outsourced to the private sector.

 

A union moderniser Jim was chairman of Unions 21 – a think tank for progressive unions - and a strong advocate of moving unions towards partnership working with employers; an approach that has been used to successfully navigate the worst economic downturn with only a few compulsory redundancies. He sat on the Fabian Commission on Taxation and Citizenship and is a trustee and previous member of the Duke of Edinburgh Study Conference that aims to improve the quality and wisdom of leaders in society.

 

Born in Largs he is married with a son and daughter.

 

Peter Sands, group chief executive, Standard Chartered

Peter Sands joined the Board of Standard Chartered PLC as Group Finance Director on 14 May 2002 and was appointed as Group Chief Executive on 20 November 2006. Before his appointment as Group Chief Executive he was responsible for Finance, Strategy, Risk and Technology and Operations. Prior to this, Peter was a Director with worldwide consultants McKinsey & Co.

Peter had been with McKinsey since 1988 where he worked extensively in the banking and technology sectors in a wide range of international markets. He was elected a partner of McKinsey in 1996 and became a Director in 2000.

Prior to joining McKinsey, Peter worked for the United Kingdom’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Peter graduated from Oxford University and holds a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University, where he was a Harkness Fellow.

Peter, who grew up in Asia, is married with four children.

 

Tracy has worked with Standard Chartered Bank for over 25 years. She is a member of the Institute of Financial Services and has spent most of her career in banking roles both in the UK and in Hong Kong.

Tracy became the Group Head of Human Resources in March 2006 with her portfolio expanding to include Group Corporate Affairs in January 2010. Tracy’s priorities are to ensure HR enables the Bank’s growth through its people strategies for resourcing talent, learning and development and retention.

Prior to this Tracy was Group Head of Corporate Affairs. Responsible for Standard Chartered Bank's, media relations, investor relations, internal communications, government relations, corporate responsibility strategies and brand development worldwide. [She was also Head of the Group Chief Executive's Office].

Before heading up the Corporate Affairs function, Tracy's prior roles include Executive Resourcing and Development, and multinational corporate relationship management in Wholesale Banking.

Tracy was a non-executive director of SC First Bank in Korea from 2005-2007 and became a non-executive director of eaga plc in September 2007. At eaga she chairs the Remuneration Committee and is a member of the Audit Committee.

Tracy is a Diversity & Inclusion Ambassador for the Bank and was one of the founding members of the Group D&I Council set up in 2004. She is also a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personal Development.

Married, with two young children, Tracy's hobbies include playing the piano, tennis and travelling.

John Varley, group chief executive, Barclays

John was appointed Group Chief Executive in September 2004, having been Deputy Chief Executive from October 2003. Prior to this, he was Finance Director. John joined the Group Executive Committee in September 1996 and was an Executive Director of the Group in June 1998.

John was Chief Executive, Retail Financial Services, from April 1998 to October 2000; Chairman of the Asset Management Division between 1995 and 1998. Deputy Chief Executive of BZW's Equity Division between 1991 and 1994 and head of BZW's offices in South East Asia between 1989 and 1991. He joined the Corporate Finance Department of Barclays Merchant Bank in 1982.

He is Chairman of Business Action on Homelessness and President of the Employer's Forum on Disability and member of the International Advisory Panel of the Monetary Authority of Singapore. He is a Non Executive Director of Astra Zeneca PLC. Honorary President of the UK Drug Policy Commission. Treasurer and Trustee St Dunstan's and Trustee of Thornton Smith& Plevins Young People Trust. On the Board of Directors of the IMC.

John is married and a father to two children.

Dr Kim Winser OBE, Special Advisor to Global Brands and Retailers

From April 2006 Winser was President and Chief Executive Officer of the British luxury fashion brand, Aquascutum. Prior to this appointment, Winser was associated with the turnaround of Pringle of Scotland, appointed to the role of CEO following its takeover in 2000.

Before joining Pringle, Winser was the only female director of Marks & Spencer, rising within the ranks from when she joined M&S in 1977 as a management trainee.

Kim Winser is listed number three in the Wall Street Journal Europe’s most successful business women. She was honored by The Queen with an OBE (Order of the British Empire) in 2006 for her contributions to the fashion industry.
